Motorcycle Repair: 1985 goldwing, generator coils, fuel pump relay

Question
My Goldwing quits running after about 10 minutes.  If it sits for about 30, it will start again only to quit in about 10-15 minutes.  This bike sat for 2 years unridden before I purchased it.  Runs great when running but can't keep it running.  When quits all other electrical seems to work okay.  Will backfire if I try to start immediately after stopping.  Must sit 10-15 min. before starting again.

Answer
Hi Larry,

A backfire can be a sign of a lean fuel supply.
If your fuel pump flow seems okay then it
could be the fuel pump relay acting up.
Follow the blue/yellow wire up from the pump to
find the relay, it is near the ignition coils
I believe.

If your spark seems to be acting up then
it might be the ignition pulse generator coils
at the front of the engine in the timing
belt area. They should pulse a very low voltage,
like 0.1 or 0.2 or so.

If the bike has a fuel filter that might also
be a suspect.

Good luck!
