Motorcycle Repair: s&s carb problem or venting issue, drag pipes, vent cap

Question
QUESTION: Hi mike
I have a 1984 shovelhead the motor is .10 over stock compression with drag pipes. For the ignition system I run a twin tec model 1005. The carb is a s&s e jetted 29.5 intermediate and 68 main. I have recently replaced the intake seals and the carb body seal and the spacer block seal. The bike runs good it wil pull hard through all four gears and runs good at 45 and below. My problem is if I run over 50 or 55 mph for a short distance say 2 miles it will act like its running outta gas. I pull over let it idle and will run again but do the same thing. I have checked out my timing it is correct. I have checked the petcock it flows good.  The vent cap on my tanks is clean n not clogged. Do you think I might have a venting issue or a float that's sticking closed? Or is it someing else?

ANSWER: Pull your plugs and let me know what color they are.

QUESTION: Ok mike pulled the plugs front is a cinnamon colored mabey slightly darker the back is a dark brown. I should tell u the bike idled for about 30 seconds befor it was shut off. Some more info for u the plugs are champion RN12YC gapped at .035. I run accel 8.8 wires.

Answer
From what you are describing I would say you have a fuel problem. Sounds like the bike is being gas starved. try riding the bike without the fuel cap and see if you still have the same problem. If you still do i would pull the petcock and check the filter in it. Lastly I would check the float in the carb
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
