Motorcycle Repair: 1996 750 Honda Magna, 750 honda magna, fuel pump

Question
I have had this bike about a month. I had ridden it about 50 miles since I had it with no problems. I started it the other day to ride and it started sputtering and then died. Im sure its a fuel problem. The tank is clean and fuel flows fine. Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks  Gary

Answer
Hi Gary,

the fuel pump should pump about
30 ounces per minute.

If you run it for 5 seconds and
then check the fuel amount
and then times that by 12 it will
give you the amount of fuel it pumps
per minute.

If all the cylinders are affected then
it might be a fuel pump or filter problem.
If only one cylinder is cutting out
then it might be a dirty carb.
There is a fuel cut off relay behind
the fuel pump also.
The pump is usually on the left
top side of the bike under the side cover.

You can drain the carb and fill it
with some safe seafoam or yamaha carb
cleaner. These will not harm the plastics.
Let it soak awhile and then drain, start
and try again.

If you do not hear the fuel pump run briefly when
you first turn on the ignition then the
fuel relay or pump may not be working.

Good luck!
