Motorcycle Repair: Engine temp hot!!, coolant level, radiator cap

Question
I recently baught a 2007 yzf 600 from a buddy of mine and I noticed that the enging temperature exceeds to 100 degress while running..could you please tell me what could be the cause of this problem and how do I go about fixing it myself?

Answer
Hi Phillip,

It is not uncommon for these engines to
reach 100 or even 105 degrees when
idling in traffic etc.

The cooling system operates under pressure
so the boiling point is higher than
it would be without pressure.

Just check that your fans come on around
100-105 degrees as you could have a
faulty fan sensor in the radiator.

Also check that your coolant overflow
tank has some fluid in it.

If it does not cool down a bit when moving
then check the coolant level in the
radiator cap when cooled down.

If you remove the radiator cap and rock the bike
back and forth it might release any
air trapped in the system.

If the temperature won't cool down when moving
then you may also have a faulty thermostat
which is in the engine just down
from the radiator at the end of
the rad hose.

If your temperature goes down once you
are moving and only goes up
when idling then 100 degrees is normal.

These engine often run leaner mixtures
than older engines and tend to run
hot. Stand near a new Harley when
it is idling and yours will feel cool!

Good luck!
