Motorcycle Repair: 2006 yamaha pw80, clutch plates, yamaha pw80

Question
My girlfriends son has a 2006 yamaha pw80. Problem is, when you put it in gear & idle, bike surges intime w/ cylinder firing?  Any ideas would be helpful!!

Answer
Hello John,

What is happening is the bikes's clutch is
engaging and disengaging slightly
as the bike's engine fires.

Each time the bike fires it runs slightly
faster and this surge causes the clutch
to begin it's engagment.

The clutch is a centrifugal unit and
depends on engine speed to engage.

You can try slowing the bike's
idle down a bit and that might help.
If slowing the idle doesn't affect it
then the clutch plates may be slightly
warped from use and from heat.

Replacing any warped plates will help.
You can lay them on a piece of glass
to check for warpage.

The clutch spring and ball engagment
unit should be checked for
wear as well.

Most likely either the idle speed is too fast
or the clutch plates are starting to warp.
It doesn't really hurt anything other
than the drivability of the bike.

Replace the warped clutch plates if the problem
persists or worsens.

Good luck!
