Motorcycle Repair: rear wheel locked up, honda gold wing, cycle salvage

Question
I was riding my 1981 Honda Gold wing Interstate when the rear wheel locked up.  My Question would this be a clutch or a transmission problem and what is the simplest way to find out?

Answer
Lee. Can the bike be started an run in neutral. If the center stand is still on the bike, set it on the stand with the engine running can you squeeze the clutch lever and hear any change in the engine sound. Also while up on the stand can the rear wheel be spun by hand while the transmission is in neutral. If it will not turn it may not be the transmission it could be the rear brakes or worse the drive line (differential) Narrow down the problem first sometimes the diff.. will shell out and you may have to purchase another. The price can be can be ugly, almost $900.00 if they are available. If this is the case tray Steves Cycle Salvage in Tifton Ga. 1-800-622-9253 may be they can find one. Salvage units are about 60% of new. Try even checking the bearings that carry the rear wheel they have been known to go bad also, these are at least cheap to fix.
