Motorcycle Repair: oil overfill, oil tank, cam case

Question
2002 fatboy, 17k miles, bike sat for about 2 weeks, without starting eng. or cking oil level, changed oil and filter, very little oil came out, assumed oil level was low, added 3qts oil. rode bike for about 20 miles, eng. started leaking oil and found oil tank was overfilled. What do you think is the most likely cause and how to repair problem.

Answer
Your oil tank sits higher than your oil pump, so sometimes the oil weeps past the check valve in the oil pump. You then get oil in the bottom end. That makes the oil tank look low. You start the bike and the oil is pumped back to the tank. I would keep an eye on it. You might just have had a speck of dirt holding the check valve open and it might not happen again.
If it gets to bad you would have to have the cam case open and the check valve checked
Good luck and happy riding
