Motorcycle Repair: 305, clutch plate, clutch plates

Question
Mr Silver,
I'm retiring Aug 1st and have been thinking about buying a 60's 305 Honda to restore. My main concern is about finding parts to do so, especially clutch plates. Should I be concerned about being able to get parts for such a project, and finding parts to keep it running? thanks Dave

Answer
David, I have rebuilt about 6-7 engines in the past year and a half. Barnett makes a 305 clutch plate kit, but OEM stuff is pretty plentiful still.

Dunno if you are going to do a Dream, Scrambler or Super Hawk, but I wouldn't worry too much about parts. There are usually a lot of parts on Ebay. The hardest part to find now is the primary chain, which fits all models.

I just rebuilt my 1961 CB77, which has LOTS of differences between that year and the 62-onwards models. I found a NOS crankshaft and seat for it on Ebay.

There is a forum on Yahoo for the Honda305 guys, plus the VJMC.org site where you can post free ads and/or join the club to connect with other members who share your interests.

I have comprehensive Restoration Guide CDs available for each separate model. Check my website for details, if interested.

Good luck with the future project bike. Find the very best one you can afford to minimize excess parts searching and costs.
