Motorcycle Repair: Kawasaki KE 125, kawasaki ke, crank

Question
1981 Kawasaki KE 125, been sitting for a long time when I got it, 975 miles on it.  Got it running, but when you go to rev it up, its real sluggish about it, and won't idle.  But when you finally get it revved up it goes wide open, even with the throttle closed.  Pulled the carb and cleaned it, but it is still doing it.  What could it be?

Answer
I used to work for Kawasaki. This not uncommon. Heres what you may not want to hear, the KE is not an actual Kawasaki bike it is but its made in another country for Kawasaki so the quality is not quite the same. The crank seals will dry out making for a lean running condition. athese units can be sluggish to rev but if you get one to rev out they will go wide open and can blow up. One of my mechanics had one on his lift and he got it started but it revved up the jumped into gear and shot tools across the shop before he got it shut down. Replace the crank seals specifically the flywheel side on the left. If the other side is bad you will use a lot of tranny oil and it will smoke a lot more. Try this first the go for the rest of the tune-up.
