Motorcycle Repair: 1973 SL70 CARB PROBLEM, alignment marks, big bore kit

Question
I AM HAVING AN ISSUE WITH THE CARB? THE BIKE IDLES WELL AND RUNS WELL IF I GIVE THROTTLE SLOW TO MODERATELY IF I GIVE IT FULL THROTTLE ABRUBTLY IT WILL BOG AND DIE.IT ALSO SEEMS TO FOUL THE SPARK PLUG. I HAVE CLEANED THE CARB AND INSTALLED A NEW SPARK PLUG.

Answer
Donald, start from the beginning as "carb problems" often are the result of other maintenance problems.

Adjust the valves to .002" COLD intake/exhaust on the T mark alignment of the compression stroke.
Stock compression is about 150-180 psi.

Clean the points, adjust the gap to about .014" and see that they are opening at the F mark alignment marks. There is a mechanical spark advancer inside the flywheel. IF it is sticking/stuck then you won't get proper spark timing, which influences the vacuum signals to the carburetor metering circuits. You will have to remove the flywheel, using a special puller tool to check the condition of the spark advancer system.

If your bike has a different air filter/exhaust system the standard specs may not work for your application. If you have a big bore kit or different camshaft the settings will need to be worked out trial and error.

Float level is 7mm
Main jet is either 65 or 68 depending on what series your carburetor is.... 626A/626B.
Idle jet is #40, needle clip in the middle of the 5 notches
Idle mixture screw out 1 3/8

There are air bleed passages in the carburetor intake throat which must be clean, as well as cross-drilled holes in the main jet holder. EVERYTHING must be clean and clear in the fuel system.
