Motorcycle Repair: 1963 Dream Front Suspension, worse case scenario, shock absorber

Question
Bill,
You have helped me in the past and I need help again.  I have removed the front suspension on my 1963 Honda Dream 305.  The bolt (philips drive with nut on other side) at the lower end of the shock absorber seems seized.  I can not get either one of them to budge.  I have soaked in WD40 and Marvel Oil but still will not free up.  I removed the nut from the other side rather easily but the screw (bolt) will not come out. I believe it must thread into the lower shock and the threads are seized. Can you give me any help? I'm removing this since the "loop" part of the suspension arm (goes around lower front fender) is broken and missing.  I found a used replacement and am trying to install.
Thanks,
Louis

Answer
Louis, Yep! Those screws are #$@@$%@&& to get out. I wrestled with the ones on my CE71 restoration and finally found a large LONG bit (#3 Phillips), supported the shock on the ground or a board, then used the bit as a "shocking tool" by hitting it on the end (not in an impact driver) with a 3lb. sledge hammer a few times. Then, I use the impact driver to work it loose. I recall hitting the bit as hard as I could, before the screws finally loosened up. Worse case scenario, drill the heads off with progressively large drill bits or find an EDM machine shop to burn them out. A little propane heat might help or I have seen some bolt freezing stuff in a can that is supposed to help remove them.

Not much else to say about this very challenging task, but if you keep pounding on them, especially now that you have soaked them with penetrating oil, they "should" come out.

Good luck!
