Motorcycle Repair: 1970 cl 100 petcock removal, petrol tank, rust removal

Question
i have a 1970 cl 100, the fueltank has been sitting empty for a number of years and is very rusted inside. im attempting to remove the rust before buying a new tank and cannot figure out how to remove the petcock, is it rivited on? i do not see any bolts holding it on.

Answer
Hi Angel,

If I remember correctly you should
be able to pull the o-ring
and screen out of the inside of the petcock
after unscrewing the bowl.

The screw that holds the petcock onto
the tank should be under the bowl
screen inside the bottom of the petcock.
It may be very tight if rusted.

Use a screwdriver tip that fits very well
in the screw and clamp a vice-grip to the handle
and then work the screw until it breaks loose.
At that point some penetrating fluid might help.

You can remove rust with either a product
made for that purpose or even with
an electrical method that turns the rust
black and also loosens it up from the base metal.

I have used the electical method on a PC50 moped
fuel tank and it loosened up alot of rust but took
a few hours each session.

Good luck!
