Motorcycle Repair: Motorcycle, yamaha xs750, charging system

Question
I've got a 1978 Yamaha xs750 with both electric and kick start. When i crank it with the electric it never wants to fire. If i use the kicker it starts no problem. When i hit the electric, could it be grounding it somehow? I also have a relay that sits behind the battery. When the engine is running that relay is getting real hot and melting the white connector. But when the engine is running everything else works fine like lights and ext. Could these two problems be the same? And do you have any other advice?
Thanks

Answer
You could have 2 problems the not starting problem is common to all makes. Sometimes the starter take so much voltage that the cdi wont trigger and start the bike. Kick starting does not require the extra voltage. The relay behind the battery could be getting to much voltage so have the charging system checked while off then running to see if it puts out more than 13.8 volts.
