Motorcycle Repair: 2003 Dyna Wide Guide Anniversary, answer check, hooten

Question
QUESTION: Starts great.  After about two miles it just dies. I can wait 20 to 30 minutes and it will start again but only runs about one mile or less and dies again.  This has now happen two straight times I was riding it. The only thing that has happen that could have a influence on this is right before it happen the first time I lugged it coming off of a dead stop at a stop light.  I was in third gear when I thought I was in first gear.  Nothing other than that.  Sounds like some electrical modular or something like that?  I don't have a clue.

Thanks for you help in this matter.

Best Regards,
Dan Hooten

ANSWER: Check and see if you are getting spark when it shuts off. Also check to see if you have power going to the coil when it shuts off and let me know

QUESTION: It appears that there not any spark after it dies.  It has done the same thing again over the weekend.  I started it again yesterday and was just letting it idle and it died again and wouldn't start.  Doesn't appear to be getting a spark.  Help??  Thanks in advance.

ANSWER: Forgot to ask, is it fuel injected and does the check engine light come on?

QUESTION: It is carb.  Has manual choke.  The engine light comes on when starting sometimes but goes out and stays out when running.  I started it a couple of times today.  Basically the same thing happen.  However, once I left the choke out for an extended period of time and it ran fine.  Pushed choke in and let idle I was putting the seat back on.  So it had ran 2 to 3 times as long as it did the other day.  Got on it and started up the hill form my house and didn't make it a block until it stopped.  Wouldn't start again as usual.  Paul Harvey:  Now you have the rest of the story.  Thanks for your help/

Answer
Sounds like either the  ignition is going out or the cam position senser is going out. the problem is you hve no way of testign them. You can get a dianistic run and then you will know. If you dont you will be changing parts until you find the correct one
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
