Motorcycle Repair: Problems, breather vent, low beams

Question
So I have a couple questions. I have  97 gsxr 750 with roughly 26000 miles on it at the end of last riding season my low beams stopped working but my high beams work fine everyone in awhile my low beams will work but not all the time. Second question I put about 5000 to 7000 miles on my motorcycle a year but everytime I go to start my motorcycle is usually does not start I have to try and pop start it which does not work but after I try and pop start it I open the gas cap and it fires right up it does not make any sense to me. Third question this year I got my motorcycle out and put about 500 miles on so far and I went to use my horn one day and I heard a little buzz and it has not worked ever since every once in a while ill accidently hit the horn button and heard a short buzz but it never works.

Answer
Hi Kenny,

I will address your questions in order:

1. No headlight low beams:

The power for the low beams starts at
the dimmer switch. The power then
travels on a black/green wire
to fuse number 2.

From fuse #2 the juice goes again on a
black/green wire to the low beams.

So, check if the power is getting to
fuse #2 and that the fuse holder is okay.

Check the black/green wires for breaks.
Finally if you have no power to fuse 2
then check the dimmer switch itself.

2. Bike starts after opening gas cap:

Your bike has a fuel tank breather vent
which allows air into and out of the tank
as necessary.
This is usually located near the top of
the tank, possibly under the fuel cap.

If this vent is plugged or restricted
then a vacuum or pressure can build up
inside the fuel tank. If it creates a
vacuum then the fuel may not be able
to pump easily and the bike may not
start until you open the cap and
let the tank breathe.

Check for a plugged vent hole or vent hose
and make sure the tank is vented.

3. No horn:

This can be a problem with the wiring, horn
or horn button.

The power should be steady to the horn
on a orange/green wire. Key on of course.

When you push the horn button it grounds
the other horn wire which is black/blue.

If you have power to the horn and
you ground the black/blue wire
it should work. If it does not
then the horn unit itself is faulty.
If it does work then you may have a
faulty horn button or wiring.
So, check for power, ground the b/bl wire.
Check the horn unit and then button.

Good luck,
Wayne S.
