Motorcycle Repair: Carb cleaning, carbs, linkage

Question
How far can you take your carbs apart before they need to be re-synchronized?  If I avoid taking out the throttle slides can I remove the bowl and float to get at the jets to clean them?

My bike is an older Suzuki with Mikuni carbs.

Actually once they are removed from the carb holders in the head they may need to be syncronized and sometimes just the wear in the linkage can throw the carbs off a little.But go ahead and clean as much as you can and reset the carb as close as you can to each one being equal to start with.Even though the braces on the front and back of the carbs may not have moved they still should be checked.
