Motorcycle Repair: yamaha?//, pickup coil, screw driver

Question
I have 99 yamaha yzf 6r.I was about to leave the when all of a sudden everything goes off.
I had a fuse that blew and turned out to be the kickstand safety wire..it was nicked in a couple spots and I taped it up n it seems to be ok..at first it wouldn't turn over at all,now It's turning over but will not fire..I took plug wire off stuck a screw driver in it and turned it over and got no spark..someone said I need new coil...I just think that it would've started acting up if the coil was going bad..is there something else it could be,or a sensor,or????????? I just need some help really bad. Theres no motorcycles shops within 2 hours... I would greatly appreciate any help u might have...please respond..
I can be reached at the email address or by phone.
my name is Corey..and again any help would-be great

Answer
Hi Corey,

First make sure the battery is fully charged
as these ignitions like lots of
battery power to function well.

If the bike is turning over but no spark
pull the seat off and check if the CDI
unit is getting power on the RED/BLACK
wire when the key is on.

If not, check for a blown 15 amp ignition fuse.
Also check ignition switch and engine stop
switch as the power goes through them.

The power goes from the battery to
the main fuse and then to the ignition switch.

From the ignition switch the power goes through
the engine stop or kill switch.

Then the power goes to the CDI unit
to power the ignition.

The pickup coil in the left engine case
triggers the CDI unit to make the ignition
coils spark.

The pickup coil wires are grey and black.
There should be 248-372 ohms
of resistance between the two wires
when disconnected.

To recap:

I would double check battery voltage
and connections before getting into
the other components.

Then check for power on the ignition fuse,

Then check for power to the CDI unit RED/BLACK, key on.

If none, check fuses, ignition and engine stop switches
for problems.

If you have power to the CDI unit and still
no spark, check the pickup coil ohms with
a multimeter.

It doesn't hurt to check any connectors
you see and spray some electronic
cleaner in them.

Poor connections often cause problems.

Good luck!
