Motorcycle Repair: 1980 CB650, honda cb650, clutch springs

Question
I just got a complete bike from a freind. It was running before I got it but has been sitting for a couple years. i am currently cleaning the carbs to get it running. The big problem I have is that it won't shift out of neutral. I have tried to shift it while moving the back tire and everything. Any ideas? I am going to get it running in hopes that it will shift when it is running.

Answer
Justin, The first order of business would be to see if the shaft is frozen in the outer side cover.

Once that cover is off, then you have just the shaft sticking out. If it still won't move, then yo need to go to the other side and remove the clutch cover. Drain the oil and check for any signs of metal parts or shavings, indicating serious damage.

You can look at some of the shift linkage parts behind the clutch, but it is easier to just remove the clutch assembly. Remove the four bolts and take off the outer cover, clutch springs, plates, etc. There should be a snap ring that holds the inner clutch hub on, then you can remove the inner and outer hubs, revealing access to the rest of the shift selector parts.

You can remove the shift shaft at that time to see if it is bent and inspect the rest of the parts. If nothing is noted and the shift drum won't turn manually, then you will have to pull the motor and split the cases to get to the shift drum/forks and transmission gears.
