Motorcycle Repair: 1984 honda magna v45 vf750c, honda magna v45, spark plug heat range

Question
hi there this is the same bike i had the carb problem with. But i think i got that figured out. I think i might have an electrical problem too and i dont know where to look. My bike runs alright now but it seems to miss once it heats up. It doesnt smoke at all. It should have more power than it does too. It seems to make a crackling sound at high revs.  I have new spark plugs in it and i pulled the plug caps off one at a time and they all seem to make it die out so..One more thing i can tell you. the fuel goes down faster than it should. Think you can help me?

Answer
Hi Reid,

A misfiring engine can use more fuel
but your spark plug colors will tell
you what is happening inside the engine.

The key is to use some clean or new plugs
and then run it at the speed where
the problem is occuring.

After a short run like this try to
stop the engine quickly so as not
to foul the plugs. Pull in the clutch
and hit the engine stop button, coast
to a stop with the engine off.

Pull the spark plugs and check the color
against this chart:
http://verrill.com/moto/sellingguide/sparkplugs/plugcolorchart.htm

If the plugs are more dark or black colored
then your fuel mixture is too rich.
This means too much fuel or insufficient air flow.
This can be choke on, main jet too large, leaking
fuel petcock diaphragm, plugged air filter.

If the spark plug looks very light colored then
you have either overheating or lack of fuel,
or intake air leaks.
This can be main jet too small, incorrect spark plug
heat range, plugged fuel filter or insufficient
fuel supply. Also check the cooling fan and coolant
levels.

Ignition problems are hard to pinpoint unless
something stops working completely.
Example: An ignition coil or ignition
pulse coil could work when cold and act up
when hot.

A faulty ignition spark unit may act up when hot
also. These are impossible to test so are replaced
as a last resort after first trying ignition
and pulse coil replacement.

If you adjust the fuel mixture according to the spark plug
colors it may help. If nothing changes you may
have to venture into the ignition components.

Often the problem is just loose or dirty ignition
connector plugs. Use good quality electronic
store sprays on these, like "Deoxit" or similar.
A loose battery cable or poor battery can also
affect the ignition performance on these bikes.

Good luck!
