Motorcycle Repair: 1982 suzuki 550 starter, suzuki gs550, starter solenoid

Question
I have a 1982 suzuki gs550 that I turn on the key, push the start button and nothing happens. I am wondering if you think it would be the start button, starter or a fuse.

Answer
If you turn on the key, do the lights come on?  If so then the main fuse is OK.  Next thing to check (most common fault) is the starter solenoid.  Check to see if you get 12V on BOTH terminals when you press the starter button.  If not, it could be the solenoid or the actuation button.  To check that, find the solenoid actuator (nromally two pin connector) and check for 12V between those two when the starter button is pressed.  If you hear a loud click when you press the starter button, but the starter is not engaging, and you get 12V on both of the large terminals on the solenoid when this occurs, then the starter itself is suspect.  Let me know,  Jan
