Motorcycle Repair: yamaha rt 100, air filter oil, screw hole

Question
Hello Wayne. My son recently bought a 1997 yamaha rt 100. We know nothing about motor bikes. I think it uses straight gas, but you need to put oil in under the seat is that right. do you know how to get the seat up and what kind of oil do i put there. Thanks so much

Answer
Hi Brian,

The seat has a small lever on the left side
I believe. Just push it forward and the seat
should release or lift up.

The oil tank uses a good quality motorcycle
two-cycle injection oil. You can use Yamaha brand or
other as long as it is okay for motorcycles.
The newer synthetic two-cycle or two-stroke oil
is very good and smokes less usually.

Make sure you keep oil in the tank
or the engine will not be lubed.
It uses a small oil pump located in the
front right engine case.
If you want to see if the oil is
getting to the pump there is a small
bleed screw on the side of the pump.
If you loosen it the oil should
flow out of the bleed screw hole.
This is also how you bleed air out of the
oil line.
The throttle cable is connected
to the pump also to control the
oil delivery at different speeds.

Keep the spark plug clean, keep oil
in the tank and add straight gas
to the gas tank.
Check your air filter behind the carb
as engine life is dependent on it
being clean. One screw holds the
lid over the filter on.

Wash it out in solvent and squeeze dry.
You can get air filter oil but it may
affect the running if you get the filter
too oily. Just keep it clean and the bike
will last longer.

These are a good and tough engine with
a little maintenance.

Good luck!
Wayne S.
