Motorcycle Repair: CB 450 electrical issue, fuse holder, cb 450

Question
Over the past winter I have been rebuilding and turning a 1970 cb450 into a cafe racer. I would say I'm about 95 % done now and have hit a wall with the electrical. I had everything electrical working and have been able to to fire it up. What now has happened, it seems that the whole electrical system has failed. I checked and replaced the fuse, and looking for sorts from the battery to everything but my multimeter is picking up connections. I am stumped. I'm putting my money on the rectifier or the regulator but not an electrical expert. If you have any info that could help please respond.

Thanks Julian.

Answer
Hi Julian,

The first thing to check out is your battery
condition, a battery load test can do that.

Next is the battery cable connections
on both ends of the cables.
Clean and tight are the key words here.

Your battery power goes directly to the fuse
and onward to your ignition switch and regulator on a red wire.
The rectifier is also connected on red/white but it
is direct and does not go through the fuse.

If you have a loss of power check the battery, the fuse,
and if you have power to the ignition switch (RED)

The regulator could possibly blow the fuse if it
were faulty and the rectifier would likely drain
the battery dead if faulty.

You may just have a bad fuse holder or a bad wire
to the ignition switch or a bad ignition switch.

Good luck!
