Motorcycle Repair: Mousetrap and footshift install, tight squeeze, dirty oil

Question
Motorcycle Repair: Mousetrap and footshift install, tight squeeze, dirty oil
48 panhead
Hi,

I recently traded my '96 Fatboy for a '48 Panhead, agter having EVOs all my life I got the bike of my dreams. It's a bobber so definitely not original, it has a suicide shift and no front brake so I'm a bit nervous about it as I have a long hill before my garage, I'll probably end up through the door.
I bought a Mousetrap and foot shifter from a guy that sells old parts, it does have a ratchet top shifter so it should be easier.
My question is, do I need to remove the primary to install the foot shifter? and is it possible to modify it so I could keep it both ways?
And lastly, I see a lot of Panheads without oil filters, do you think it's a bad idea to remove it and run the oil lines directly to the pump?

thanks a bunch
Chris

Answer
You shouldnt have to remove the primary, unless you cant get to the shifter. Its a tight squeeze.

You cant modify it to work both ways.
If it were me I would run a filter. If you dont, your just running dirty oil.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
