Motorcycle Repair: 1982 KZ1100 Spectre, pickup coil, kz1100

Question
My engine has just started running off of two cylinders, cylinder 1 & 4 are fine but 2 & 3 are not firing, I rechecked the plug wires & connections to the coil (both fire from the right coil) with no luck. Is there any way to check to see if the coil is getting power itself to try to track this problem down. Bike was running like a Big Dawg yesterday and now runs like a beaten puppy.

Answer
Hi Greg,

The power to the coils is usually a red wire.
If your left coil has power then the right
probably does too. (you can check, key on)

The problem you are having is most likely
the pickup or pulse coil inside the small right
engine cover.

There are two small pickup coils, one for cylinders
1/4 and one for cylinders 2/3.

If you find your igniter unit the pickup
wires for 2/3 should be yellow and red.
Check for 360-540 ohms resistance between
these wires unplugged from the igniter.
They should not have any continuity to
ground either just each other.

They supply a small pulse to the igniter
to make it spark the coil.
If your cylinders 1/4 are okay then this
pickup coil is likely the problem.

You can swap the ignition coils just in case
you have a bad ignition coil too but
I suspect your 2/3 pickup coil is failing.
Check the wires just in case it is just
a broken wire rather than the unit itself.

Good luck!
