Motorcycle Repair: 1984 vt750 honda shadow, regulator problems, loose plug
vt750 shadow
my 84 honda shadow is acting up the lights pulsate at idle and when I rev it up they dim out a little, when I go down the road it will misfire could this be my stator ive changed the battery and still the same checked the stators wires A,b,c a to b a to c and c to b good connection there but what amount of AC mvolt should i get out of it for a proper charge

Answer

Hi Matt,

The yellow stator wires should have
connection between all the wires
but should not connect to ground.
This is checked unplugged.

Also unplugged you should have
about 30 volts AC at fast idle and
up to about 80 volts AC at high rpms.
Any two of the stator's yellow wires you connect to should
show this AC voltage.

If your AC voltage seems about right then
you may have regulator problems.
The regulator runs all voltage above
16 volts to ground so the regulator
needs a good ground too.
Ground is usually green wire on Honda's.

Check that your battery ground to the frame
is clean and tight too.

If you get good stator readings and your
battery is good then just try a new regulator.
You may also want to check the connector
plugs between stator and regulator
for any loose connections, a loose plug
can cause overheating of the connectors
and wiring.

Stators can occasionally have problems
that only show up when warm so be aware
just in  case it acts different when warmed
up.

Some true electronic spray like "DeOxit"
is worth having to clean the connectors
of any corrosion. All the connectors
get some corrosion after so many
years in the weather.

Good luck!
