Motorcycle Repair: 1985 honda atc 250sx, honda atc, clutch adjustment

Question
I just bought this 3 wheeler and the kick start will spin, but it won't crank over kinda like the things slipping .. Sounds like the bottom is turning over but top of motor ain't ... If that makes sense. Someone did say in these 3 wheelers the gears in the kick start wear and just slip. I don't know if you can help that'd be excellent.. Thanks Travis

Answer

Hi Travis,

There are a couple of possibilities for this
problem.

If you have an automatic or centrifugal clutch
it might be either adjusted wrong or the plates
could be worn out. Misadjustment is common.

To adjust, remove the right side cap over the clutch adjustment
locknut and screw. Unlock the locknut, turn the screw
counterclockwise until you feel some slight resistance.
Turn the screw back clockwise about 1/4 turn and
lock the locknut. Watch that the screw doesn't turn
too much when you lock the nut.

Try your kickstart again, if you get the clutch set about
right it may start working again.
If not the clutch may need a rebuild.

If you have a manual clutch it may need
more clearance on the clutch adjustment
or more cable slack.

If it is the kickstart itself the gears
may be slipping and you need to inspect
the springs and gears on the kickstart itself.
It is inside the right engine case with the clutch.

It can be removed and fixed without splitting the engine.

Usually the clutch slipping is what makes the kickstart
feel weird. Adjusting it may help in this case.

Good luck!
