Motorcycle Repair: Yamaha XT 350 1990, yamaha 350 xt, yamaha xt 350

Question
I have problems with a Yamaha 350 xt starts very good in neutral and will run very good also, but put it in to gear "any" and motor will just stop! I  have removed the side stand switch long time ago! I thinking maybe the neutral light switch but! it ohms out good 0% in neutral & 1% in gear so I'm stumped on this one!

Answer
Eric, not much of a vintage Honda question, is it?  :>)

The sidestand switch wiring has to be jumpered to complete the circuit, I imagine, not just disconnected. Check your wiring to see if the jumper has been disconnected. That's how most of them work, at least on Hondas.

Has the been sitting for a long time? If so, perhaps the clutch is stuck together. Make sure you have the clutch adjustment set up correctly, with just a little slack at the lever end. Put the bike in gear, pull in the clutch and see if it rolls. If not, then the clutch needs servicing.

I don't have any info on Yamaha Thumper electrics with safety circuits. Sometimes the clutch lever has a safety switch on it, as well.

Try www.thumperstuff.com, thumpertalk.com or the Four Stroke Singles Club or see if there are XT Yamaha forums on the web.
