Motorcycle Repair: transmission removal on 83 Honda CX650, stator coils, crankshaft bearings

Question
I am trying to replace the crankshaft bearings on my '83 Honda CX650.  I'm using the Clymer manual as my guide.  I'm to the point of removing the transmission and am running into my first problem.  The transmission is supposed to slide right out according to the manual.  It is getting hung up after it slides out about an inch.  I went to opposite side to remove the engine cover there after removing the water pump etc. but can't get that cover to come off either.  It hangs up after coming out about 1/4 inch.  I'm afraid to work any of the parts too hard in fear of damaging something.  Any ideas?

Answer
Hi Jeff,

If the starter is off and the rear cover
is coming part way off it might be the
alternator magnets holding the cover in.
Try to pull it off straight to prevent harm
to the stator coils. The magnets are fairly strong.

Watch the end of the shift drum as it
has to be turned to go through the opening in the engine case.
You will have to tap the trans shaft lightly
with a plastic hammer or similar tool.

Check that all the shifter assembly is off and
the shift drum is free to move out through the
engine case hole.

Always double check the cases for holding bolts or screws etc

Let me know if you need more info.
