Motorcycle Repair: 89 tourglide ultra classic, evo motor, mounting brackets

Question
hello Mike,

i have a 89 tourglide ultra classic that im going to change fairings on, using a 02 Electra batwing. my concerns are the gauges, and mounting brackets. Do I need to get electric gauges if so for what year would work best. would I also need to get a wire harness off a newer model? I do have a batwing inner and outer and would like to use what i have, basically adding gauges, stereo, speakers. planned on fabing mounting brakets. I understand that this is not gonna be a plug and play project but thats half the fun, i found a 02 inner fairing with all accessories including wire harness for the fairing as well  as for the chassis, is this something that I could integrate into my old bagger to help bring it into present times? Also what year jugs and pistons are interchangeable with my 80 incher? I found a set of take offs for an 02 88in. could i use them with my heads? thanks, Lee

Answer
The 02 speedo will not work. It runs off a speedo senser that is connected to the tranny. You dont have that connection on your tranny. You would have to use a speedo that would run off the front wheel, like what you have right now. You would have to use a older tac as well. You would need something aroud 1990.
you can use the wiring, its just going to take some work splicing and comparing the wiring from one bike to the other..
the 2002 cylinders and pistons will not work with your bike. You have a EVO motor and they are from a Twin Cam. You can only use EVO parts on your motor. 1986-1998
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
