Motorcycle Repair: 1974 Yamaha DT 250, yamaha dt 250, drum brakes

Question
I bought this enduro as a kind of starter bike. Everything seems to be fine on it except the electrical gives me some problems, i need new brakes, and possibly a new magneto. If the bike has trouble starting sometimes does it mean i need a new magneto coil? if so how can i replace it? and also do you have any tips to replacing the drum brakes?

Answer
Tony... not Honda questions. Get a shop manual to guide you through troubleshooting and brake repairs. Drum brakes are very straightforward, but you need to be careful with the brake return springs, as you disconnect the shoes/springs.

Yamahas had their share of poor electronics in the early days. Have coil tested separately. It looks like they had points condenser and/or CDI magneto back then, judging from online microfiche.
IF you have points and condenser, the point contacts must be clean and shiny, then gapped so the points just open at the firing mark. Condensers can be erratic, but usually pass/fail. If CDI you will have to consult the manuals.

I am not a Yamaha expert and don't want to be one... :>)
