Motorcycle Repair: 85 yamaha, clymer manuals, manual haynes

Question
QUESTION: I recently bought a 85 xj700 maxim and I am looking for a repair manual for it.  When I look up haynes/clymer manuals they show manuals for xj700 N, or C, or NC, or X.  How do I know what model I have?

ANSWER: Hi Jason,

This can get very complicated so here is a basic model list:

700's:

XJ700N = 1985 XJ700 Maxim, 49-state version (air cooled)
XJ700NC = 1985 XJ700 Maxim, California models
XJ700XN = 1985 XJ700 Maxim X, 49-state version
XJ700XNC = 1985 XJ700 Maxim X, California models

1986:

XJ700S = 1986 XJ700 Maxim, 49-state version
XJ700SC = 1986 XJ700 Maxim, California models
XJ700XS = 1986 XJ700 Maxim X, 49-state version
XJ700XSC = 1986 XJ700 Maxim X, California models

MODEL CODES:

700's:

1985 XJ700 Maxim USA: 1FG (49-state version)
1985 XJ700 Maxim USA: 1JJ (California version)
1985 XJ700 Maxim Canada: 1FH

1985 XJ700 Maxim X USA : 1AA (49-state version)
1985 XJ700 Maxim X USA: 1FJ (California version)

1986 XJ700 Maxim USA: 1NH (49-state version)
1986 XJ700 Maxim USA: 1NK (California version)
1986 XJ700 Maxim Canada: 1NJ

1986 XJ700 Maxim X USA: 1NW (49-state version)
1986 XJ700 Maxim X USA: 1LT (California version)

The "X" models are liquid cooled so they have a radiator.
If you send me your vin number I could probably
break it down more exactly for you but the
model codes above may help.

QUESTION: my vin is jya1fg004fa00588    1985 XJ700 "N" Right?  Can you recommend a good manual?  Haynes, clymer?

Answer
Hi Jason,

The "JYA" in the vin means "Japanese, Yamaha, Motorcycle (Division A)"
The  "1FG" means 1985 XJ700N Maxim 49 state USA version.
The tenth digit "F" designates year 1985.
They cost $2,899.00 when new.

Either manual is okay, Clymer may have more detailed info
but Haynes has lots of pictures and is easier
to read for some people.
I would look at both and see if one suits you
better than the other. They both have lots
of good information.
You might find some manual info here:

Good luck!
