Motorcycle Repair: 2002 polaris sportsman 400, polaris sportsman 400, cdi ignition

Question
Hi there , I have a no start poblem with my atv. I pulled the spark plug to check for spark and there is only one spark occuring and then nothing...when I turn off the key and retry there is again only one spark...the spark occurrs immediately. I am wondering if the problem is my ignition coil. If it isn't the coilthen what could the problem be?

Answer
Hi Brad,

These ignition problems can be tough to pin down
due to all the various components.

First things I would check would be
the black wire to the ETC switch on the throttle,
then the engine kill switch and
ignition switch. The black wire runs to
the CDI ignition unit and also grounds out
the ignition coil to stop the engine.

You may be able to disconnect the black
wire from the CDI unit and see if you get
any spark. The wire could have a short
somewhere or one of the switches might
be the problem.

If you can't get anywhere with that then
check the ignition pick up coil or pulse
coil. The wires are white/red to white and
should read about 185 ohms.
This is the device that sends a small voltage pulse
to your CDI to trigger a spark voltage to
the ignition coil.

The ignition coil gets it's power from the CDI
after the pick up coil triggers it.
There is also a charge coil which charges
up the CDI unit, this is probably working
if you are getting one spark.

The ignition coil may be okay even if it
only sparks once. The problem is more
likely in the kill switches or wire
that grounds them.

Last resort may be to replace the pick up
or pulse coil after checking the black wire
on CDI for problems.

Good Luck!
