Motorcycle Repair: CBX 1000 carb adjustments, carb adjustments, cbxclub

Question
Hi Jan

I'm 'hoping' to adjust carburetor balance and fast idle (i.e. on-choke idle) on a CBX 1000 Z, 1979. Having removed the seat and tank, I'm shocked by the lack of access and view. I still haven't achieved a sighting of the fast idle mechanism, let alone adjusted it!

Questions arise, please (with apologies for a bit of a list):

(1) - Do I need to tilt the engine to access the fast idle mechanism (will it even help to tilt the engine?).

(2) - Do I need a special tool to adjust carb balance? (the adjusters look to be very difficult to get at). Are these sold in the UK, please?

(3) - Very important question, please (to my cautious mind, anyway) - For how long is it safe to idle a CBX engine, with no forward motion and no cooling airflow.

(4) - Can you recommend a full carb rebuild kit, please. Mike Nixon recommends Randall Washington, but a UK source would be preferable, if only to keep postage cost down.

With thanks and regards
David

Answer
Hi David,

It is difficult to do anything with the carbs or adjustments while everything is in place, as you already discovered.  You can save time by just removing the rear 4 exhaust bolts and leaving the system in place while tilting the engine, you can get enough clearance to get the carbs off but be careful you do not go too far.

Regarding the carb adjustment tool I would contact your local club or perhaps have a look at www.sixcenter.nl in Holland.

If you just idle, then you can do this for a while (10 mins or so) without things getting too hot.  I normally will put a good size fan in front of the engine to keep things cooler.

Again with reference to carb rebuild kits, check with your local cbxclub and don't forget about the very small pressed-in jets in the 1979 carbs.

Good luck,  Jan
