Motorcycle Repair: CBX 100 Z engine rattle, cam chains, cbx 1000

Question
Hi Jan

Just bought a 1979 CBX 1000. Not accustomed to the engine sounds at idle, so can't judge if mine is normal. At idle, I hear a rattle, which could (only could) be a chain. Is this normal, please? Could it be the clutch? I've read that they rattle. Is there a way of identifying whether its a chain or the clutch, please?

Many thanks and regards
David

Answer
Congratulations on your purchase!  Hope you will be able to join the ICOA at www.cbxclub.com.
Most of the rattling sound should go away when you pull in the clutch.  Some noise will still be there, but it should be significantly reduced.  Sometimes the cam chains are noisy, these should be adjusted to the right tension.  CBX tensioners are getting a little old, so may need some help in getting the chain to the right tension.  I always watch the tensioner from the top (take valve cover off) when loosened to see that it is free and adjusts correctly.
Good luck,  Jan
