Motorcycle Repair: battery not charging, heritage softail, gel battery

Question
QUESTION: three year old battery (gel battery) on 1994 heritage softail, last week bike would not start, low battery.  I charged battery and it seemed fine. Went on a ride, fifty miles out stopped for gas, and bike would not start, coasted and jump-started bike, rode another 29 miles and engine sputtered and shut down.  When I charged the battery I did NOT clean the terminals, they looked O K.  I am now recharging battery, and I have cleaned all terminals.  What should I do?  How do I check to see if the bike is charging the battery while running.  What is your opinion?

ANSWER: At the battery what voltage are you showing at around 2000 RPM using a volt meter?

QUESTION: HI Mike,
The volt meter reads 12.42 volts with the motor running at about 2000 rpm.  After charging battery I checked voltage.  It showed 13.86 volts, after I installed the battery and started the bike, the voltage showed 12.42 at idle, and the same when I reved it up to 2000 RPM.

Answer
Your bike is not charging. You should be showing around 13.5 volts when its charging. You need to test the stator. Do a OHMS test on the stator wires and then a AC voltage test ont he stator. It should be showing around 50-60 volts at the plug at around 2000 RPM. If not then the stator is bad and needs replaced. If it passes the tests then the regulator is bad
Good luck and happy riding
