Motorcycle Repair: Ignitors, transistor technology, fuel mileage

Question
Hello Jan,

I have a 1979 CBX and want to know if the Ignitors interchangeable between years?  I'm happy to change the connector if required.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

Michael Anderson

Answer
Hi Michael,

Yes physically you can change the connectors, as long as you can extract the spades from the connector.  particularly the early 1979 units are now leaking the insulation all over the swingarms... If you are trying to exchange with a later year igniter, the spades themselves are smaller so you will need to solder or crimp on the larger spades.  I have had good results with Marktronic spark units, since the OKI units from Honda are no longer available.  They give a better spark and used more modern transistor technology.  The cost for the Marktronics is around $500 (last time I checked) for the whole unit. Check them out at www.marktronics.nl; I had better fuel mileage AND better performance when I switched.

Good luck,  Jan
