Motorcycle Repair: 1974 FXE Shovelhead Starter removal and replacement, clutch assembly, starter removal

Question
QUESTION: 1974 FXE Shovelhead, I got the oil tank off and starter bolts out but having trouble with the solenoid fork hung up to get the starter assy off to replace the starter.  I removed the primary cover and the solenoid plunger is hung up with the solenoid fork.  Any tips to get this loose so I can replace the starter?  Thanks.

ANSWER: If you are just replacing the starter you shouldnt have to mess with the jackshaft. Which bolts did you remove  to get the starter out?

QUESTION: I am replacing the starter I had to remove the Primary cover due to one starter bolt mounted from the inside with a locknut. I pulled the solenoid off and oil tank to get to the starter bolts (2).  Right now I have the starter flopping in the breeze with the solenoid pulled the plunger and jackshaft still attached and the fork attached in the primary area.

Answer
You dont have to remove the starter housing to get the starter out. Loosen the two long bolts at the end of the starter and it will slide out. To remove the jackshaft from the solenoid fork you just bend them then the jackshaft will slide out if you have the clutch assembly out of the way. Once you put it together just bend it back.
Good luck and happy riding
