Motorcycle Repair: starter clutch gear, clutch gear, starter clutch

Question
I think I have a bad clutch gear on my 2004 heritage. The jack shaft is not binding and the starter is engaging and the starter motor is turning. I pulled the starter apart and all the gear teeth and bearings look good. I can take two pairs of pliers and turn the clutch gear. Real easy one way and a little tuff the other. I took the clutch gear apart and cleaned the springs and rollers and put it back together, same result. My question is should I be able to turn the clutch gear with two pairs of pliers and can it be rebuilt? I would hate to buy a new one and have the same growling and grinding in my starter

Answer
If the jackshaft is not turning and everything else is ok, then your clutch gear is bad.
Personnally, if it were me and I was having problems with my starter, I would replace the whole starter. When you start bying parts like this you get pretty close to the cost of a new starter
Good luck and happy riding
