Motorcycle Repair: 2001 honda shadow wont start, honda shadow 750, honda shadow 750 ace

Question
Hi Mr. Silver, my 2001 honda shadow 750 ace won't start without me jumpin the battery from my car. once i removed the cable and restart the bike, it won't start. just change to a brand new battery last year. had new starter put in. can you please help me diagnos this proble. thank you.

Answer
Jenny...  First, the battery must be fully charged and able to pass a "load test" before you move onto other areas to check.

If the battery has been discharged down to near zero a few times, that will damage the cells to a point where you need to replace it with a fresh one.

Once the battery issue is a known good factor, then you have to evaluate whether the charging system is A. working to specs and B. not discharging the battery back through the regulator rectifier.

Now if you get a buzzing/clicking sound when you press the starter button and the battery is fully charged, the the starter solenoid may be defective now.

If the whole system seems to be working... good battery, good solenoid and good starter motor, but it won't crank the engine over than the problem is with the starter clutch assembly.

So, the steps involved in the starter system include: Battery, ignition switch, starter button switch, starter solenoid, starter motor and starter clutch, plus all the wiring in between. There is also a safety switch on the clutch lever mount and some models have a safety switch on the sidestand.

"It won't start" leaves a lot to interpretation, so I have covered the major components involved with getting the bike to start.
