Motorcycle Repair: removal of rear sprocket bushings in hub, network tool warehouse, slide hammer

Question
I need to know the proper procedure (and tool) for removing the rear sprocket bushing assemblies that are pressed in the rer hub, without cracking the hub on the outer side (it is pretty thin). Bikes are the 70 thru 74 CB/CL/SL 100 and 125.  Thanks a lot.  Bob

Answer
Bob, I'm not sure if there is a procedure in Honda's shop manual for bushing removals in a blind hole. There are various type of slide hammer bearing removal tools that could work.

You may be able to rent them at auto parts stores or equipment rental shops.

In some applications, you can fill the cavity with heavy grease and then drive in a tight fitting stud/tool to compress the grease into the cavity which displaces the bushings upwards.

Other options are a die-grinder air tool with some small cutting wheels or a burr-type of bit that would cut through the bushing. If you have a drill press, you might try to drill down the sides of the outer edges of the bushing to loosen their grip in the hole.

Drilling a small hole in the back side of the casting could give you access to drive the edge of the bushings out.
