Motorcycle Repair: c100 weak spark, flywheel engine, bill silver

Question
I am struggling to start a 1964 Honda C100, I am getting a spark at the plug but only if I hold the tip 2-3mm away from the ground (copper oil feed pipe in this case) if I actually touch the ground there is no spark at all. Is the coil shot?

Answer
Kieran, Are you using a fresh spark plug to do your testing? If not, try a new one. Yours could be cracked at the insulator or carbon tracked.

Other than that you can remove the flywheel, using the correct removal tool, clean any rust from the magnet surface, clean the point's contact surfaces and then set them up so they just OPEN at the F mark alignment on the flywheel/engine case mark. If the point contact faces are deeply pitted, replace them and the condenser.

You might want to investigate the coil wire condition, plus the spark plug cap. Don't use a resistor cap on the plug wire.
