Motorcycle Repair: 1982 Honda cm250, spark plug gap, honda cm250

Question
QUESTION: Ok I'm not sure if you remember me but I'm the guy that is building a buggy from this bike that got wrecked. I got almost all the bugs worked out but I still have a few minor questions. What is the spark plug gap? Also how do you change the spark plug wires I don't see any way to disconnect them without cutting them, could I splice in new ones in maybe? Last I got that 30mm oko carb almost perfect but if it is just idling and I give it quick 1/2 throttle while in neutral it spudders and dies if I don't let up but if you ease into it its just fine should I worry about this?

ANSWER: Erik, the plugs come out of the box gapped properly for most applications. Should be around .026"
give or take a few thou.

Carb sounds lean on acceleration. Honda carbs have an accelerator pump to overcome the flat spot when cranking the throttle open. If yours doesn't have one, then you will have to raise the needle up and/or go up on the main jet. Try putting some choke on and duplicating the condition. If it improves then you are too lean.

Carb may also be too large for the port size and cam timing/engine configuration, causing the airflow to stall out momentarily when you whack the throttle open.

QUESTION: Thank you for your time. How do you disconnect the spark plug wires from the coil? I think I might of found a air leak where the intake connects to the engine so I took some thin rubber and made the old seal a little thicker by adding some extra rubber. It has been too muddy here in Nebraska to try it out still. Oh one last thing im going to re lash the valves could you tell me the gap or whatever it is called that there is supposed to be in tdc?

Answer
Erik, the coil wires are manufactured into the coils. In some cases you an work the joint loose with a Dremel tool, remove the wire, add new wire, then re-glue the joint with JB weld or something similar. They are really not designed for wire replacement.

The valve clearances are .002" at TDC COMPRESSION stroke, meaning that one side will be on compression stroke at TDC and the opposite cylinder will be on overlap (both valves slightly open). Turn the crankshaft ONE turn, then check the opposite side. If you mis-adjust the valves then, when you turn it over ONE turn, they will be REALLY loose.
The valves should never be looser than .002-.003" at any time in the valve open/close cycle.
