Motorcycle Repair: Yamaha Virago 750, yamaha virago 750, plug caps

Question
I have a 96 Virago 750 that I won in the divorce.  I really like this bike and just got the the carbs replaced, however, it started to fire then quit.  Everytime we open the throttle it dies.  Any suggestions?

Answer
Pam, this is obviously not a Honda question, however whoever "replaced the carbs" needs to check their work. Viragos are very difficult to do carburetor work on and have lots of emission lines and controls that need to be checked over.

Then, check the spark plugs/spark plug caps for being worn/fouled or loose. Opening the throttle makes requests of both the fuel system as well as tests the spark voltage reserves of the coils and secondary wiring.

If you don't have a history on the bike, it could have other ignition or fuel system issues. Go to www.bikebandit.com for illustrations of parts and to get an idea of parts pricing/availability.

When in doubt, do a full tune-up on it, including valve adjustment and compression test. The look for ignition and fuel system deficits. Check Virago websites for more specific support info.
