Motorcycle Repair: oil leak,, rear cylinder, oil leak

Question
I have a 99 1200c sporster. It has 13250 miles. The leak is on the rear cylinder,it drips on the starter and exhaust shield. It was just a little but it seems to be getting worse, sombody did say something about I should have the gaskets replaced on the rear cylinder. This person also said it was common to leak around the heads like that. My question is should I do both cylinders if I have gaskets replaced on the leaking one. What would be the aprox cost, and what would you recommend...   Also what is a good way to pick up some horsepower out of this engine ,without getting deep in the engine. I plan to only have it through the summer.

Answer
It sounds like your leak is at the rocker box. Over time it will keep getting worse, so you need to get it fixed. This is not a common leak, its just a leak that happens. If it were me and since the bike is 11 years old, I would replace both the front and rear gaskets at the same time. You dont want to replace the ones that are leaking and then a year later get a leak in the other rocker box. I cannot give you a cost for the work. Labor rates are different all over the country and it different between indepent shops as compared to a dealer.
About the only thing you can do for more horses are, change to a high flow air cleaner, good tuned exhsut and change carbs to a more free flowing carb
Good luck and happy riding
