Motorcycle Repair: Battery Not staying charged, ampmeter, fuses

Question
I replaced my battery because it would die if I did not use my bike for a couple of days. Since then it still will do the same thing. If I use it daily it is fine. What could be causing this issue?

Answer
It sounds like there is a problem with the ignition switch or perhaps you have other accessories which drain the battery.  There are also diodes in the chanrging system which can go bad if someone tried to charge the battery without disconnecting the terminals.  Easiest way to check is to put an ampmeter in series with the battery, and look at how much power is being consumed when the ignition and everything is switched off.  anything more than 0.05A means something is draining the battery, and then you have to disconnect things until the drain is identified.  Sometimes easiest way to do that, is to take out fuses one by one until you find the circuit with the drain problem.  Good luck,  Jan
