Motorcycle Repair: 1970 Harley sportster 900, harley sportster, worm gear

i just put a new clutch in the bike i am trying to adjust the clutch so it will engage, i have tried to adjust the cable at the handel and at the clutch worm, iam gettin frustrated and dont know what iam missin. should i replace the cable? or where would a good starting point be.i cant get it to work properly.it feels like i get close and then nothin

Start by loosening the cable so there is alot of slack in it. then loosen the worm gear. Now push the cable back towards the primary. that wasy the worm gear is all the way back. Now adjust the worm gear. tighten it and then back it out about 1/8 of a turn. Now adjust the cable so you have about 1/8 inch play in the lever
