Motorcycle Repair: 1979 honda cx500c, honda cx500, air leaks

Question
i have a 79 honda cx500c and the idle is a bit high at about 1800- 2000 rpm. I tride adjusting the idle speed screw but it didnt lower the rpm.

Answer
David... Make sure that the choke cable isn't hanging up. It has a fast idle function when the knob is pulled out.

The ignition timing is CDI automatic, so shouldn't be a problem, but is worth checking if nothing else shows up.

I would be looking for air leaks in the intake tract.. intake manifold, O-ring junctions, and the air cut valve diaphragm.

Adjust the valves and camchain tensioner. These early bikes had problems with tensioners, stators, and pulse generators.
