Motorcycle Repair: Jetting a dual S&S super B carb, intermediate jet, drag pipes

Question
Hi I have a 1966 shovelhead  96 stroker engine it has a street and drag cam drag pipes with baffels and I am using two S&S super B carb with a singile manifold. My question is what jets should I start out with I tride a 62 main and a 32 intermadiate and the bike was smoking a lot and spark plugs  black with soth. Today I tride a 48 main and a 28 intermediate ran with no smoke didn't check the plugs because engine was still hot talked to my frend and he told me that main jet was way to small and it will damage piston rings. Need you're help thanks.

Answer
What you need to do is start with the intermediate jet. Clean your plugs and go for about a 5 mile ride. Don not go over around 2500 RPMs. If you stay below that you are only running on the intermediate jet. What you are trying to do is set the intermidate jet. If the bike spits through the carb, then the jet is to large. Spitting or bogging through the exhaust and the jet is to small. Remember, everytime you change jets reset the air/fuel misture screw. Once you have the intermediate set then go the the main jet. Do the same thing, except ride the bike over 3000 RPM.
Good luck and happy riding
