Motorcycle Repair: cam, weisco pistons, advance curves

Question
QUESTION: Hi mike I have a 1986 1340 had it rebuilt top and bottom this past winter. Had 10:1 weisco pistons and andrews ev27 cam installed ,heads were reworked seats and valves reground and new seals. The bike also has dyna s ignition and vance %26 hines 2 into 1. The bike runs good except its pings when pulling up hill, Ive retarded the timeing that helped some.Had it dyno tuned and tech said it had to much compression he could not stop the pinging suggested a cam with more duration andrews ev51. Should I just go back to piston with 8.5:1 or try a different cam, Im looking for reliability not speed

ANSWER: What fuel are you running?

QUESTION: HI mike I`m running 93 octane , my ignition is an old dyna s  with no voes switch, would a newer system thats voes capatible with adjustable advance curves help elimanate my spark knock.I see some even let you adjust rear cyl. timing I don`t even know what that would do.Any advice you could give would be helpful thanks.

Answer
Since you are running high octane and your still getting pinging, before you go to the trouble and expense of changing cams or pistons I would first try retarding it a little more. If that doesnt work then I would go with the new ignition so that you can change the timing curve which will help
Good luck and happy riding
