Motorcycle Repair: Is my clutch due for replacement., motorcycle clutches, clutch lever

Question
My question isnt about a particular bike but rather your basic knowledge on motorcycle clutches.   I have a couple of motorcycles where the clutch doesnt grab until the clutch lever is all the way out.  I have the clutch lever free play adjusted the way its suppose to be with just a little bit of free play.
Is there any way to adjust the clutch to get it to grab sooner or is it in need of replacement?

Answer
Well there are normally three things that affect the clutch: Cable adjustment, Clutch operation adjustment, and wear.  Sounds like you have taken care of the cable adjustment, but perhaps the clutch is worn.  On Honda bikes, there is normally a round cover on the clutch case which can be opened with a suitable piece of flat metal, and behing there is normally a screw with a locknut.  The screw should be adjusted with the correct amount of free play too.  If both cable and clutch operation is adjusted correctly, then the only thing left is wear of the clutch plates, and these will need to be replaced if the wear is too bad.  The way to check that is if you are in a high gear and at speed, and open the throttle more, do the revs increase without the bike speeding up?  If so then the clutch is worn out and will need immediate replacement.

Good Luck,  Jan
